Gerald (“Gerry”) Willis

Gerald (“Gerry”) Willis, CD, BA, passed away in Ottawa on December 9, 2022. Predeceased by his parents William Willis and Ruby (Stinson) Willis Bayne and his sister, Marilyn Willis. Survived by his wife of 56 years, Monica; son, Daniel, and daughter, Leah. Gerry volunteered for the Royal Canadian Naval Air Service in 1957. He was commissioned and received his Royal Canadian Navy Pilot’s Wings in 1960, whereupon he served as a carrier pilot flying from the deck of the HCMS Bonaventure. Gerry was then selected for jet training, flying, among others, the T-33 Silver Star. He served as formation leader for the CFB Shearwater demonstration team. Gerry also served as a peacekeeper in Vietnam in 1973, where he was decorated for his service as a team lead near the demilitarized zone. Upon his return from Vietnam, Gerry flew the C-130 Hercules from CFB Trenton from 1973-1979. Among his many duties, he flew numerous search and rescue missions as pilot in command. In 1982, Gerry earned a BA in Economics from St. Mary’s University. After his retirement from the Canadian Forces in 1985, he continued to fly with Transport Canada and Nav Canada in his role as a Civil Aviation Inspector. Gerry was dedicated to excellence in all of his endeavours. He died in hospital with his family by his side, two days after his 82nd birthday. He will be missed by his family and friends.
